Andrew has been involved in racing all his life, for many years as assistant to his father Reg Hollinshead. He rode successfully as an amateur under both codes. He took over the licence after Reg’s death and trained 34 winners in 20 months. He has a keen eye for the thoroughbred and an impressive purchasing record including: Tominator, twice winner of the Northumberland Plate and winner of over £290,000, who cost only £7,500 and Distinctive Image, who cost £25,000, winning £32,000 in his first year and then sold on for £95,000.
His involvement with French racing started with a season spent working in Chantilly with master trainer Oliver Douieb which culminated with Detroit’s Arc win. That experience convinced him that Chantilly is among the finest places in the world for training horses. More recently, winter seasons spent at Cagnes Sur Mer with a small string have been fun and lucrative, highlighting the benefits of French racing.
Andrew and his wife Debbie have decided that, now their two children Amy and Jack have become independent, the time for a new challenge is right and the lure of France in irresistible.
